The most notable addition here is the custom combo technique: When the player hits three attack buttons while the combo bar is powered up, he can absolutely hammer the other fighter for a few seconds (racking up some awesome combos in the process). Moreover, the fighting engine has been tweaked to give the game some distinction from the previous Street Fighter games, including the original Street Fighter Alpha (which was a prequel to Street Fighter 2, making Street Fighter Alpha 2 the sequel to a prequel of a sequel to the original Street Fighter).Ĭontrol is, as usual, exceptional. It also does away with the before-fight conversation, save for final the boss round. Alpha 2, however, forgoes any semblance of a plot right from the start (the player doesn't find out what's going with his favorite character until the final fight). Some new fighters have also entered the fray, including a very cool old assassin named Gen who can switch fighting styles. Zangeif and Dhalsim, from Street Fighter 2, have returned. The game features 18 fighters this time around - and for the first time Akuma is directly playable. The backgrounds are first rate, giving Alpha 2 some of the best scenery yet seen in a Street Fighter game. The animation is topnotch, as are the sounds and music. The graphics are solid and done in the same anime style as the first Alpha. Saturn owners should be pleased to know that Street Fighter Alpha 2's translation from coin-op to home is almost flawless.

CATCHPLAY and partners also control exclusive distribution rights to these films in Taiwan, China, Hong Kong and Macau, with The Revenant generating outstanding box office results from these territories in 2016. In early 2015, we closed a partnership deal to invest in New Regency’s three enthralling titles, namely The Revenant, Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell, marking the first investment of a Taiwanese company in major Hollywood productions. I’m not merely referring to content here though, as the PC version is also technically the superior version over the console editions due to the opportunity to crank up the visuals to make this the best-looking Mortal Kombat-title to date. I suppose that’s more of a balancing game for the marketing department, but in this case PC gamers already have the definitive version upon launch. It’s a tricky strategy because gamers might hold out on buying the original game until the “collection” comes, thus potentially hurting sales. Thankfully, frustration with the game doesn’t come out of quality issues, but rather out of losing a fight that went right down to the wire due to excellent balancing between characters.And there are quite a few, because the Komplete Collection (as the name implies) includes all the DLC characters that were released after the game’s initial release. I’m not denying that you can’t play a perfect game using the keyboard (though I personally can’t pull that off), but arcade controls are so much better for venting your frustration upon. Though PC might traditionally prefer the keyboard, the game is best played using a gamepad or a set or arcade controls like the MadCatz Fightstick. The style feels right for MK’s control scheme, which doesn’t revolve as much around quarter/half-circles forward and backward but features a more jagged approach that translates well into the game’s “in your face” kind of on-screen brutality. Mortal Kombat doesn’t just return to the original game’s title, it also brings back the 2D fighting style – albeit delivered through excellent 3D visuals. It makes for a more immersive experience, and the story doesn’t just feel like it was slapped on there for good measure. Where most fighting games during the past 20 or so years have had some kind of background story explaining why these fighters are all battling each other to the death, Mortal Kombat goes the extra mile and ties each individual fight into the main story arch using in-game animations. Of course, much of the game is exactly the same as in the console version, right down to the surprisingly well-developed narrative structure. That wait is now over, but is Mortal Kombat for PCs the ultimate Mortal Kombat experience or is it merely a sloppy port? The last few years have seen some of the older titles being re-released through Steam/G4WL, but PC enthusiasts haven’t had the pleasure of being able to play the later titles. Of course, at this point in time, Capcom had a minute fraction of the acclaim they currently enjoy in the West. I would argue that this is the earliest ancestor of the Street Fighter line, despite lacking any obvious connection to the franchise in general. It would be released in the West sometime that year as either “Avengers” or “Avenger”: the game’s title screen and many of the arcade cabinets themselves use the former title, but some promotional material uses the alternate title. On February 1 st, 1987, Hissatsu Buraiken – which roughly translates to “Deadly Ruffian Fist” – was released in Japanese arcades to relatively little fanfare. What better place to start than by taking a look at some of the earlier titles that preceded, inspired or even simply shared the name of one of Capcom’s greatest all-time hits? Avengers As naïve as we were back then, the mystery was nothing we really pursued at the time, but SF2 actually owes its existence to multiple titles. Back in my childhood, we just thought of it as “Street Fighter”: even though the “II” was omnipresent, none of us had ever really experienced a “Street Fighter 1”. It popularized the fighting game genre in a way that no previous game had and managed to extend the life of arcades in the West. Street Fighter II is probably one of the most important video games of all-time. As such, I’ve got a fair amount of the games in various forms in my collection as it is: the 30 th Anniversary Collection just affords me the opportunity to own several older titles on the PC, my platform of choice. While Street Fighter is probably no longer one of my favorite fighting game series, it still occupies a special place in my heart. Not long after, I finally had a legitimate home version of my very own: Super Street Fighter II for the Sega Genesis. Of course, that was the IBM-PC version, which was a complete train wreck, but you try telling that to a happy child. I became enamored with the game, almost to the point of obsession and I was incredibly happy when I was finally able to own a version of the game of my very own. Another cousin had the Special Champion Edition on the Sega Genesis and eventually, that first cousin would obtain a copy of Street Fighter II Turbo for the SNES as well. In my case, the first game I played was the original version of Street Fighter II for the Super NES at my cousin’s house when I was around 5 or 6 years old. The 2D fighting game genre is among my favorites across the entirety of mass media, and like a majority of the children of the ‘90s, that love stemmed from the first time I played a Street Fighter game. The thing is, I owe a lot of my interest in video games to Street Fighter. Granted, most games in the series came out here, but there are a few rarities that were Japan-exclusive. The only limits I’m putting on this series of retrospective articles is that I will be sticking mostly to Street Fighter games that managed to see Western release. Still, considering the fact that Capcom will be releasing a Street Fighter 30 th Anniversary Collection this May – featuring a whopping 12 games – now seems as good a time as any to do a wistful look back at one of Capcom’s most enduring franchises. I plan to mainly just write these whenever I’m not writing something else, so they’ll trickle out infrequently. This series isn’t necessarily going to be as prominent as the other Retrospectives have been. The thing is, after the Classic MegaMan article ended up being split into multiple parts, any excuse I had for not writing about Street Fighter evaporated. I’ll be honest: I did originally dismiss the idea of doing a Retrospective on the Street Fighter series back when I looked over Tekken last year. While he tries to tone down the accent and pleads with his students to help him get a permanent teaching job at the university, Rachel discovers she and Ross are still married, and charges into his class yelling at him. Ross is given a guest professorship at New York University and, eager to impress his students, inexplicably lapses into a fake English accent. Unable to afford treatment and unwilling to borrow the money from Chandler, he takes on an acting role to renew his insurance, during which the hernia helps out with an uncooperative child star. Joey's health benefits lapse just as he develops a hernia. Meanwhile, Joey has trouble finding a new roommate. Chandler claims Monica still considers it only her apartment, resulting in a fight and Ross being the mediator. Monica flatly dismisses Chandler's idea to turn the spare bedroom into a game room. Ross denies to Phoebe that he loves Rachel, yet invites her to move in with him, all while Rachel is unaware they are still legally married. When Monica assures her they will, Rachel becomes distraught and seeks comfort from Ross, just as he is about to tell her the truth about their marriage. Rachel then upsets Monica by her blasé reaction, convinced Monica and Chandler will never go through with it. Rachel mistakenly believes all three will be living together until Monica explains Rachel has to move out. Joey reacts badly to the news, though Chandler reassures him their friendship will remain the same. Monica and Chandler announce they are moving in together. Ross adamantly denies this and unsuccessfully attempts to secretly annul the marriage himself. Whilst he and Phoebe consult other women to see whether they would date him after three divorces, one of the women hypothesises that Ross is still in love with Rachel, to which Phoebe agrees. Ross promises Rachel to get their Vegas marriage annulled, only to shock Phoebe by confessing he cannot go through with it, unable to handle another failed marriage. As a tribute to them, Courteney Cox-Arquette was given top billing for the episode, and "-Arquette" was added to every cast member's last name in the opening credits. Opening Credit Gag: Courteney Cox married David Arquette between seasons 5 and 6 and she changed her last name to Cox-Arquette. Back at home, Monica and Chandler ponder the idea of marriage and decide to take their relationship forward a step by living together. She becomes angry when Joey sleeps most of the way rather than playing his promised fun road trip games she unnerves Joey by picking up a hitchhiker while he was napping. Phoebe and Joey drive back to New York in Phoebe's cab.
